What to expect during a hyperbaric session

A step-by-step walk-through of a typical hyperbaric oxygen session — entering, pressurizing, breathing oxygen, relaxing and exiting — plus tips for a comfortable session.

If you have never used a hyperbaric chamber, the process can sound more complicated than it is. A session is calm, quiet and largely hands-off. Here is exactly what happens from start to finish, whether you are using a home chamber or visiting a clinic.

Before you start

Wear comfortable clothing and bring something to do — a phone, tablet or book. The chamber is connected to its oxygen unit and checked, then you climb in and the door or zipper is sealed. Soft chambers such as the COSL15 use a simple triple-zip entry.

Entering and pressurizing

The chamber gradually pressurizes to your chosen level. The sensation is similar to the descent of an aircraft: you feel a gentle change in your ears, which clears with simple equalization — swallowing, yawning or a soft pinch-and-blow. Pressurization takes a few minutes and is intentionally slow and comfortable.

If your ears feel uncomfortable, equalize gently and let pressurization slow down. There is no rush — easing in keeps the session pleasant.

Breathing and relaxing

At pressure you breathe concentrated oxygen through a comfortable mask, supplied by the all-in-one oxygen unit. A typical session lasts 60–90 minutes. Most users simply relax — reading, streaming, listening to music, meditating or napping. Large viewing windows, quiet operation and climate comfort make the time pass easily. A spacious sitting model like the COSE15 gives you room to sit up or recline.

  • Sessions usually run 60–90 minutes
  • You can use a phone, tablet or e-reader inside
  • Soft chambers let you sit, recline or lie flat
  • Hard-shell cabins add climate control and a two-way intercom

Depressurizing and exiting

At the end the chamber returns to normal atmospheric pressure over several minutes — again, slowly and comfortably. You step out feeling rested. Many users describe the session as the most relaxing hour of their day.

Getting the most from sessions

Like most wellness routines, consistency matters more than any single session. To set up a comfortable routine at home, see mild hyperbaric therapy at home, and if you are choosing your first chamber, the COSL15 and COSE15 are easy, comfortable starting points.
